On April 22, Earth Day, political leaders from around the world will convene in New York City to sign the historic Paris Agreement, which represents the first time ever that countries have agreed to limit greenhouse gas emissions and to the goal to “pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C.” Time to celebrate, right? Wrong.
We’ve already spewed enough greenhouse gases into the atmosphere to warm 1.7°C and, if the Paris agreements are carried out as written, we’ll warm to around 2°C by 2030. In other words, the agreement may very well lead to the collapse of civilization and the natural world.
The Climate Mobilization, supported by the People's Climate Movement New York and Grassroots Harmony, will demonstrate at the UN to underscore the true impact of the Paris agreement: runaway climate change, state failure, and the deaths of billions. In order to protect civilization, we need to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions at emergency speed— in years, not decades.
