It’s Official: Democratic Party Calls for WWII-Scale National Mobilization to Combat "Global Climate Emergency"

Party Platform Also Commits Hillary Clinton to Convening Climate Summit During First 100 Days

PHILADELPHIA – In a historic first, the Democratic Party has officially embraced the need for a WWII-scale national mobilization to combat the global climate emergency. Passed by a floor voice vote of the full Democratic Convention on Monday, the Democratic platform declares a “global climate emergency,” acknowledges “the catastrophic consequences facing our country, our planet, and civilization,” and commits to “a national mobilization, and to leading a global effort to mobilize nations to address this threat on a scale not seen since World War II.”

The party platform also commits the next administration to convening “a summit of the world’s best engineers, climate scientists, policy experts, activists, and indigenous communities” during the “first 100 days” of the next administration to reassess America’s climate strategy and “chart a course to solve the climate crisis.”

Specifically, the platform contains the following passages:

Climate change poses an urgent and severe threat to our national security, and Democrats believe it would be a grave mistake for the United States to wait for another nation to take the lead in combating the global climate emergency. According to the military, climate change is a threat multiplier that is already contributing to new conflicts over resources, catastrophic natural disasters, and the degradation of vital ecosystems across the globe. While Donald Trump says that climate change is a “hoax” created by and for the Chinese, Democrats recognize the catastrophic consequences facing our country, our planet, and civilization.

We believe the United States must lead in forging a robust global solution to the climate crisis. We are committed to a national mobilization, and to leading a global effort to mobilize nations to address this threat on a scale not seen since World War II. In the first 100 days of the next administration, the President will convene a summit of the world’s best engineers, climate scientists, policy experts, activists, and indigenous communities to chart a course to solve the climate crisis.

Joseph Romm, Founding Editor of Climate Progress and world-renowned climate and energy analyst, hailed the platform language calling for a WWII-scale mobilization:

“This month, the full Democratic Platform Committee approved the strongest statement about the urgent need for climate action ever issued by a major party in this country,” Romm said. “One party in this country has finally embraced the blunt — and scientifically accurate — language of climate hawks as to what those measures actually entail.”

The historic platform amendment was sponsored by Sanders-appointed Democratic Platform Committee Member, Russell Greene, with the language co-authored by Greene; Tom Weis, President of Climate Crisis Solutions; and Ezra Silk, Co-Founder of The Climate Mobilization. Both Greene and Weis are close allies of The Climate Mobilization.

“I am proud to see the Democratic Party embrace climate truth by boldly declaring a climate emergency in their platform,” Greene said. “It is courageous. Now we need Democratic candidates up and down the ticket to make climate mobilization central to their campaigns.”

The platform amendment is a significant win for the Sanders campaign; Senator Sanders used language calling for a WWII-scale climate mobilization this spring, most notably in the April 14, 2016 Democratic debate in Brooklyn where he decried the “incrementalism” of the Paris climate agreement and used World War II as a metaphor for combating the climate crisis. Some Hillary Clinton supporters are now joining the call for mobilization.

Since last fall, The Climate Mobilization has been pressuring all the Democratic and Republican presidential contenders to champion a WWII-scale mobilization to restore a safe climate. This after a 2011 “open letter” sent to President Obama (signed by the heads of the Sierra Club, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, Earth Policy Institute, Rainforest Action Network, Energy Action Coalition, and others) failed to convince the president to respond to the “global climate emergency” with a “wartime-like mobilization” to “cut carbon emissions 80 percent (based on 2006 levels) by 2020.”

“It is heartening to see the Democratic Party formally acknowledge that saving civilization requires a massive mobilization at wartime speed,” said Lester Brown, former President of the Earth Policy Institute. “The closest analogy for what we need to do now is the belated U.S. mobilization during World War II.”

This is wonderful. We should all start sending this by letter or e-mail or e-contact form to all our representatives, locally and nationally. Keep demanding that they uphold this resolution put into the DNC platform, and of course, we have to elect as many climate concerned democrats to congress as possible.

This is progress. Now we must ensure a progressive dominated congress so we can enact meaningful legislation. We need every progressive to have the words “WW 2scale mobilization to combat climate emergency,” branded into their minds, and have it the # 1 priority (which requires no TPP of course) . As for wars and regime change also needing to stop for this to mean anything, absolutely. And yes, we know HRC is a war hawk. But with a progressive dominated congress (up to us to do the work of getting them elected) and our empowered and ever growing climate justice movements we can push her much like we pushed Obama and got him to stop KXL2 . We can obstruct her moves toward the right on military like GOP obstructed Obama.

Also Sanders will be front and center in media and influential player in the Senate from here on so we can keep her feet to the fire and publicly pressure a Dem admin- in a more visible and thus potent manner than before…even HRC’s- This combination gives us A CHANCE of doing enough to save civilization. The option realistically, is Trump in the White House and with Trumps promise to double down on coal, its end game for humanity. GOP is HUNGRY for war. Trump likely would use nuclear weapons as well. Chomsky even did a piece on Trump as Pres being the end of human civilization -

As long as we keep pushing WW2 scale mobilization for clean energy economy, and elect progressives to Congress we have hope.

While wind & solar are admirable, the manufacturing capacity does not exist to ramp up output as fast as developing economies are turning to fossil fuels. As a result, emissions are increasing regardless of what the USA does. The only energy source that is cheaper than fossil fuels was developed at Oak Ridge labs under JFK: the Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor (LFTR), a SAFE form of nuclear- which was ignored to protect fossil fuel prices and the profits from Uranium reactor patents by GE and Westinghouse.

LFTR can replace fossil fuel boilers (Light Water Reactors cant) to run the same turbines that are already hooked to the grid. Every other option requires new transmission lines- which already have eminent domain problems.

What will be the roll of the military going forward? Global warming has been declared a a National Security issue for some time as well as being a/the top emitter. I have long argue that the military has to become GREEN in tooth and nail for the survival of the Nation, and by inference, the world’s planetary life support systems. Given that the military has taken an oath to defend the Nation and its people from all enemies, both foreign and domestic, it presents a quandary. To wit: It costs the nation a lot of money to operate so it needs a strong capitalistic system to support it. However, that very capitalistic system of “socially enabled capitalism” of consumption and trash is clearly killing the people and Nation it has sworn to defend. Wasting trillions of dollars on fuel, weapons, infrastructure, and killing our youth. The military takes a dim view of wantonly killing the troops. Not only does it make for bad moral, i believe it is even treasonous.

Give me a break. Why not make all that stuff work for GREEN. All that tech, manpower, weapons manufacturing , the whole shebang. Build a new “SUPPER WEAPON,” a GREEN ECONOMY in a big hurry. As a Matter of National Defense. If we do that, Man power does not get killed, or the wounded a burden on the Nation till they die. Instead it becomes an asset to the Nation and the World. All the infrastructure stays in place for the transition but a different “weapons system” deployed. Arguably deploying socially redeemable technology throughout the nation and the world will promote peace and tranquility more effectively than bombs and drones.

These are different times and demand different solutions.
“You cannot solve a problem from the same consciousness that created it. You must learn to see the world anew.”
    —Albert Einstein
Albert again: “I do not know the weapons of WW III but WW IV will be fought with sticks and stones.”

I believe it is fair to say that humanity is currently embroiled in a life and death world wide battle with an evil beyond even the current comprehension of most Americans. An adversary that feeds many but in the end can kill all higher carbon bases life forms. That evil is CAPITALISM unrestrained by Planetary life support systems! A construct of the very people now threatened with extinction within a hand full of generations. This is unprecedented in human history. If there was ever a time, NOW “We must learn to see the world anew.”

Hillary, for all her assets does not see that horizon. Bernie clearly does and will act upon it. Not with guns, drones, and bombs but with equality, justice, compassion, humility. (Bernie refers to the White House as “public housing.”)

I too vote for WW III to be fought with equality, justice, and LOVE. WW IV with sonnets.

For how long can the military justify sending legion after legion of our youth to kill and be killed in efforts that will kill the military in the end as well as the corporate paradigm that supports it? For how long will the enlisted continue to march to its drums as family and friends back home succumb to planetary climate carnage? Surely at some point “F*** it” must prevail I would think. Can the leaders of the Military be prosecuted for treason for supporting the same socially enabled capitalistic paradigm that feeds it but kills planetary life support systems? By whom? The Military courts? The Supreme Court? Who has standing? “We the People” affected? The Children? World court? Universal acceptance of the reality? It gets tricky in my book

Let’s get real — all the climate change mobilization in the world isn’t going to help unless Washington stops its wars and cuts back its military, the biggest polluter on the planet. The DNC Platform draft foreign policy section includes its commitment to future regime change wars — endless wars, endless war spending, and endless pollution. Bernie must have missed that section when he was “negotiating” with the draft committee (or maybe he just doesn’t give a damn about war since he’s now endorsing the queen of chaos). Washington’s buildup of NATO will reck the planet long before climate change does. The Left has to stop being so grateful for every bone the Democrats and Republicans throw — the powerful never give anything away. This so-called mobilization will put the pressure on citizens to cut back on energy use, but will leave the military free to spread its death, destruction and pollution. Focus!
