On July 10, 2016 at 1 p.m. we will assemble at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Monument in City Park, Denver.
We should be responding to climate change the way we responded to Pearl Harbor with an all hands on deck effort that matches the scale of the threat. We will draw inspiration to mobilize in defense of civilization and the natural world from Dr. King's words:
"If we do not act, we shall surely be dragged down the long, dark, and shameful corridors of time reserved for those who possess power without compassion, might without morality, and strength without sight."
Dr. Keah Schuenemann with the Earth and Atmospheric Science Department, Metropolitan State University of Denver will discuss the existential threat of climate change and the urgency for mobilization.
Chuck Norris, a geologist and expert on the risks of extreme energy extraction, will explain how fracking jeopardizes our air, our water and our health for resources we don’t even need.
Lauren Swain with Yes for Health and Safety Over Fracking will tell us one of the first things we can do to take back control of our government for the protection of our health and safety.
Nathan Ballenger, Field Energy Consultant with SolarCity, will confirm clean energy technology can be scaled up to meet our needs, create jobs and boost our economy.
Joe Salazar, State Representative for House District 31, will describe the state of the policy process in Colorado and the importance of an engaged citizenry in creating the political will to rapidly transform our economy.
Leslie Glustrom with Clean Energy Action will emphasize the importance of bottom up community activism inn creating the world we want. To change everything we need everyone.
Following the initial round of comments the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions. It's up to us to mobilize within our own networks to fight denial and passivity and build political will. Gradual steps are no longer enough. We are in a climate emergency. It is time to act like it.
