The Pledge To Mobilize

The climate crisis is causing immense human suffering and damage to the natural world. It threatens to destroy civilization and kill billions of people. Overcoming the climate emergency is the great moral imperative of our time.

I CALL ON THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT TO:

  1. Commence a World War II-scale mobilization to restore a safe climate.

  2. End all greenhouse gas emissions within a decade and fund an effort to remove all excess greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.

  3. Enlist the American people in a just mobilization that rebuilds our democracy and ensures good jobs, healthcare, and dignity for all.

I pledge to organize with others to spread the truth of the climate crisis and build the power necessary to start the climate mobilization.

I’m pessimistic that the call for WWII like mobilization, even with millions, even billions of signatures, will force the world’s elites to the necessary action. But at some point climate disasters will come so frequent and damaging to wake the popular classes to the terrible threat of global warming. And the demand for mobilization will become unstoppable. Seems to me that our responsibility today is to develop plans and institute projects and model cities that demonstrate the feasibility and superiority of mobilizing for a democratic and sustainable reconstruction. This might succeed if we are lucky: that there is still time to act and that we can prevail over a xenophobic, militarist, corporate rightist force that will at that time also be fighting for the authority to lead the mobilization. To say the least these are dangerous times, but getting people to pledge and arousing them to action could move up the necessarily popular awakening.

I agree with most of your pledge. However, I don’t know what “net greenhouse gas emissions” means. Net of what? Lowering gross emissions to a percent of today’s emissions makes most sense. Also, can only elected officials take this pledge? That’s what it implies.

Your pledge is very idealistic, without a plan of how you are going to do it.
