A Message from Climate Leader Paul Gilding

Allies—

When I read the following letter responding to our 2018 Year in Review from thought leader and former CEO of Greenpeace Paul Gilding, I almost fell out of my chair. Paul’s writing and leadership on emergency climate response is core to The Climate Mobilization’s work since our founding. He is also one of our biggest supporters and advocates.

Please take a moment to hear from Paul.

Thank you,
Margaret Klein Salamon

A Message from Paul Gilding

Emergency climate action leader Paul Gilding.

Emergency climate action leader Paul Gilding.

Friends,

As someone who works across all sectors of society in the cause of climate action, it is rare for me to endorse and urge support for a specific organisation.

But as 2018 draws to a close, I want to make an exception — for a very good reason and at a very important moment.

Some 10 years ago, I co-wrote the One Degree War Plan. This argued the moment would come when society acknowledged climate change as a global emergency of existential risk — one that would require the roll out a WWII style mobilisation in response. It was a lonely argument to make in 2009 and largely dismissed, even by climate activists.

A few years ago, I was approached to advise The Climate Mobilization and was so excited with their approach and set of beliefs.

Since then they have worked both behind the scenes and publicly as one of the few groups to advocate climate change action that is actually on par with the urgency of a global emergency.

Their influence is wide and significant. In particular their uncompromising rejection of incrementalism and half-measures has shaped the demands of existing and new climate organizations. Their work has been essential to the political breakthrough in the United States in 2018 (detailed here), which could be a true game-changer. It has also heavily influenced the formation of other groups like the Extinction Rebellion in the UK, who have largely adopted the same clarity on what we now need.

I cannot speak highly enough of TCM and their importance. That’s why I urge you in the strongest possible terms to join me in supporting them at the maximum level you can. My wife Michelle and I have been making an annual contribution of $10,000. This is a significant amount of money for us but I know The Climate Mobilization will deliver truly outstanding results and there could be no better place for our money in terms of its impact.

If you want to hear more of my thoughts on the matter, Margaret and I had a video conversation earlier this year, that you might be interested in!

Please act as strongly as you can. As TCM says, it's time to go big or go home!

And finally, a sincere thank you to all who have already joined me in supporting Climate Mobilization in 2018 — your support of this work is crucial and deeply appreciated.

Kind regards,
Paul
