The Launch of Dogbane Retreat Center & Movement Hub
Your support is growing young BIPOC leaders and new survival initiatives rooted in 98 acres of land outside of Richmond, Virginia.
In 2023, The Climate Mobilization and our partners at Rhizome launched Dogbane Movement Hub and Retreat Center – 98 acres of land that hosts skill-building trainings, gatherings and cultural events for young leaders and their communities.
Since 2024, one of Dogbane’s first programs has offered free food boxes alongside trainings in food production and community organizing to working-class BIPOC youth. We are building shared strategies across organizations and connecting youth and their communities with the climate justice movement.
Dogbane is:
A Meeting Space and Retreat / Gathering Center offering Land-Based Healing for BIPOC community organizers. The dozens of retreats and trainings held at Dogbane are strengthening young leaders to confront the crises of our era. Dogbane’s programming alleviates the economic and psychological precarity of young leaders we work with, while advancing new models for the role that land stewardship, resilience, and survival initiatives can play in building social change.
A Climate Resilient Agriculture Education and Food Production Center – Dogbane’s farming team leads production of 40+ climate resilient and culturally relevant crops, more than 20 sustainably recovered fruit trees, and countless medicinal plants. We support local non-profit Rhizome to direct all of the farm’s produce for our food-based survival initiative for working-class and BIPOC leaders.
A Local Hub for Incubating Youth Driven Cooperatives and Projects – Dogbane is skilling up dozens of BIPOC & youth climate leaders to launch survival and resilience initiatives, solidarity economy projects and cooperatives for regional and national climate survival.
